Steel and Light
Galaxy of the Mind's Eye
Artist Statement:
This image is of an art glass sculpture made by artist Rollin Karg. He combines sculpted metal and blown glass into unique creations. When photographing this object I was intrigued by the geometric elements used to display the amorphous colorful center of the sculpture. For this reason, I chose to mask the most colorful aspects the image while leaving the rest desaturated.

A Study in Contrast
Artist Statement:
This photo was taken in Chelsea, Michigan right outside of a cemetery. I found this image to be interesting due to the juxtaposition between the natural overgrowth of the shrubs and the ordered shapes of the man made structure behind it. I chose to mask this bush as a visual focal point of the composition.

Ambiguity
Artist Statement:
This image was taken at Oak Grove Cemetery in Chelsea, Michigan. I chose to photograph this cannon from the perspective of its nose to give it a more abstract quality. Perhaps the only clue that the subject is a cannon is the slightly blurred cannon balls in the distance. The subtle colors of the cannons nose was all that was masked.

Elements of Earth
Artist Statement:
I took this photograph as a study of shapes, textures, and composition. The character of these stones provide enough visual interest when desaturated. However, I feel their true natural qualities can be fully appreciated in the masked area with color.

Divinity
Artist Statement:
This image depicts a statue of Jesus overlooking a grave stone in the Oak Grove Cemetery located in Chelsea, Michigan. With his outstretched hands, one gets a sense of God-like powers on display. For this reason, I chose to mask the tree directly above the statue as if it was expressing the powers of divinity in its midst.
